I do research in plant biogeography, conservation, and mountain ecology, focusing mainly on the historical and ecological factors that led to the current distribution of species, with a major interest in the Carpathian Region endemics. My approaches include:
  • Multi-layered diversity analyses of plant species, including taxonomic, genetic, phylogenetic and functional diversity at different spatial scales for understanding their evolution and enhancing their conservation.

  • Analysis of distribution through means of quantitative biogeography (e.g., Biotic Element Analysis, Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity) for delineating the evolutionary important areas.

  • Hindcasting and forecasting the potential distribution of plants through habitat suitability models for assessing the impact of climate change on the distribution of rare and threatened species and identify priorities for conservation.

  • Organizing and carrying out complex field surveys for data sampling, especially in the mountain-alpine environments, with 20 years of experience in the Carpathian Region.
    • (2017, 2019-2022) Conserving the endemic flora of the Carpathian Region – Kew Royal Botanic Garden’s Millennium Seed Bank partnership

    • (2019 – 2022) Adequate management of alien species in Romania, in agreement with EU Regulation no 1143/20 concerning the prevention and management of invasive alien species (POIM MEDIU-AXA4 - POIM120008.)

    • (2014 – 2016) ODYSSEE – Opening new avenues to model the dynamics of Species assemblages by integrating Ecology and Evolution a case study from the mountain ecosystems of the Alps and the Carpathians (Program Blanc International France – Roumanie)
