The FRUITDIV project aims at the European level to characterize, valorize and conserve the high genetic diversity of wild relatives of fruit trees in the genera Malus, Pyrus, Prunus and Amygdalus 🍎🍐🍒🍑🌱🍏🌳. Our goal is not only to characterize this diversity, but also to preserve it for the future. This will be achieved both through living gene collections (orchards), similar to Noah’s Ark, and by protecting them in the natural environment (in-situ).
In an era of global climate change 🌡️ and increasing agricultural challenges, the wild relatives of our cultivated plants represent an essential genetic treasure for ensuring the sustainability and resilience of agricultural practices. By exploring and conserving these resources, #FruitDiv aims to revolutionize the way we relate to agriculture, laying the foundations for a future in which food security, reducing pesticide use and protecting biodiversity coexist harmoniously.
We recently completed our first harvest season, collecting leaves and seeds from nearly 3,000 trees across 12 European countries, including 730 trees in Romania!
💡 Join us on this exciting journey towards a future where our agricultural practices are in harmony with nature. Together, we can protect and enhance the genetic heritage of wild fruit trees, reduce pesticide use, and preserve the precious biodiversity of our environment.
